For a short or medium layover, staying at the airport is not a compromise. Changi has extensive dining, rest areas, attractions and Jewel access subject to immigration/landside rules.
City trip needs a real buffer
A city visit can work on a long layover, but account for immigration, the MRT or road journey in both directions, terminal return and departure formalities. Do not plan from the scheduled connection length alone.
Terminal 4 needs transfer time
T4 is separate from the T1–T3/Jewel complex. If either flight uses Terminal 4, add shuttle time to the plan.
Choose a compact city plan
If you enter Singapore, choose one or two nearby objectives and a clear turnaround point. The goal is not to “see Singapore” but to enjoy the usable hours without creating connection risk.
Use the official flight board
Changi publishes official flight information. Check it before leaving the airport and again before starting the return journey.
Frequently asked questions
Is Jewel airside?
Jewel is landside, so transit passengers may need to clear immigration to visit it.
Is Terminal 4 connected to the MRT?
Not directly; use the airport shuttle to reach the MRT-linked terminal area.
Should I leave the airport on a short layover?
Usually not. Changi has enough to do inside the airport that a rushed city trip rarely adds value.
