Madrid-Barajas has Metro, rail, bus and road options. Terminal 4 has direct Cercanías access, while Metro Line 8 serves the airport network.
Terminal comes first
Before choosing a route, confirm whether you are at T1/T2/T3 or T4. The airport is large enough that the wrong terminal assumption can add meaningful time.
Public transport versus taxi
Rail or Metro is predictable for many central destinations. A taxi can be simpler with several passengers, heavy luggage or a hotel far from rail.
Use current service information
Check Aena and Madrid transit service notices on travel day, especially for overnight arrivals or maintenance.
Rail choice depends on the terminal
Madrid-Barajas is not one compact building: T1–T3 and the T4/T4S complex change which transport entrance is practical. Metro Line 8 serves the airport network, while Cercanías rail serves Terminal 4. If you arrive elsewhere, include the free Aena terminal bus or other transfer step before comparing total travel time to central Madrid.
Sources and verification
Time-sensitive airport, airline, visa, security and transport details should always be confirmed with the relevant official source before travel.
